UM’S SPIN-OFF, FLEXILICATE JOINS HAND WITH DURA-MINE TO COLLABORATE ON OPTICAL FIBRE MANUFACTURING

On 18 May 2018, at the Cube in the Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya (UM), a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between two optical fibre-based companies - Dura-Mine Sdn. Bhd. and Flexilicate Sdn. Bhd. Dura-Mine was represented by its CEO, Mr. Kadhim Salem Khalaf, and Professor Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development) of UM, represented Flexilicate as one of its founders and director. The signing was witnessed by the Director of University of Malaya Centre of Innovation and Commercialisation (UMCIC), Professor Dr. Yasmin Rofina Othman.

Dura-Mine is a local manufacturer of optical fibre cables with a significant market share in Malaysia, supplying important clients such as Telekom Malaysia Bhd. It recently expanded its operations to include the Indonesian market and Singapore with future expansions into other Asean Countries , Turkey, and the Middle East.

Flexilicate is one of UM's spin-offs. The multi-award winning company was co-founded by Dr. Ghafour Amouzad Mahdiraji under the University's Technopreneur program (led by UMCIC), commercialising research outputs from its research based sibling - the Integrated Lightwave Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering. Flexilicate and ILRG jointly run the only research-based optical fibre making facility in Malaysia, with key intellectual properties in advanced optical fibre formats, personal dosimeters, and dengue sensors.

The MoU will see Dura-Mine and Flexilicate collaborating in completing the optical fibre manufacturing ecosystem. Flexilicate will provide expert technical advice and work around making fibres that are globally competitive, with Dura-Mine providing upscaling experience and market presence.
