The establishment of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies (DSEAS)  in 1975 can be seen as a response to one of the objectives of the 1967 ASEAN Declaration, namely to promote Southeast Asian studies. The Department is the only one in Malaysia offering undergraduate and graduate programs in Southeast Asian studies.

The department comprises experts in a wide range of areas, namely, politics and international affairs in Southeast Asia, labour and economy in Southeast Asia, minorities and political conflict in Southeast Asia, migration, maritime economy, fisheries and agricultural issues in Southeast Asia, culture and performing arts in Southeast Asia, ASEAN and Regionalism in Southeast Asia as well as all the major Southeast Asian languages.

The Department objectives are :

  • To expose the students to Southeast Asian Studies and Area Studies based on a multi-disciplinary approach in teaching and learning.
  • To enhance cooperation in the fields of teaching and research among local and foreign institutions of education.
  • To become a leading educational institution in the Southeast Asian region, especially in the field of regional studies.
  • To produce highly skilled graduates in the field of Southeast Asian Studies to meet the needs of the current labor market.
